We made the most of the sunshine and went
on a walk to look for signs of summer!
The Butterfly
A few visitors arrived this week. Five fuzzy caterpillars are busy growing on our Investigation Table. We are learning all about what will happen as they grow! As part of the Green School Committee's wasted art Wednesday, we made our own caterpillars out of old egg cartons to keep the real ones company!

Maths for Fun Week!
On May 6th we kicked off a week of fun activities for Maths Week.
(After the first lesson the boys and girls declared that it was no different from normal lessons because maths is always fun!)

Homes
We are learning all about the different homes people live in, what materials they are made of and what they look like on the inside. The property bubble is back, with lots of houses and apartments being sold in the play corner! Keep an eye out for photos of our building project using clay bricks to follow!

The farm came to school today!
Froganna Beaga Glasa!
The life cycle of the frog is fascinating!

Number 5, eadai, more pattern and having fun! That's hard work!
We went on a number four hunt today. It's amazing how many you can find when you look hard enough- and they don't all look the same!
We read the Little Red Hen this week and found out how to make bread! So what better way to bring the story to life than teacher asking "Who will help me make this bread?"? The whole class answered "I will!". And not a crumb was left!
How Goes the Work?
Mr. O'Connor came to class to tell us all about his job working with lots of different gases, like helium that you find in balloons and carbon dioxide that puts the fizz into fizzy drinks. We watched how a rocket uses gas as fuel to blast off into space! Thank you Mr. O'Connor!

Our School
Emma's mum came in to tell us all about what school was like in the (not so distant!) past. Thank you Emma's mum!

People who help us (cont.).
We met Helen who helps us cross the road safely, especially on wet, windy days like today! Learning about people who help us, like Gardai, firemen and doctors is lots of fun!

People Who Help Us
Today Dr. Billington paid us a visit to talk about how doctors help us. We got to see a stethoscope in action, and how bandages are put on. Dr. Billington told us how important it is to take medicine even if it tastes yucky. But she reminded us we should never ever put something in our mouth unless we are allowed to eat it! Thank you Dr. Billington!

Our Winter Walk
Ice, Ice, Baby!
It's cold outside and we are looking at ice as part of winter. We decided to make our own ice. Nobody caught us sneaking into the staffroom to pop our bags and balloons full of water into the freezer. Then, after waiting patiently for a whole day, we took our ice back to class to watch it melt. Because we had put blue and yellow food colouring into the water, we watched as blue and yellow mixed together to make green! Have fun at home making ice in different shape moulds, and try experimenting with different food colouring. Hours of entertainment await on a rainy day as you watch it melt!

Christmas is Coming!
Numbers, Numbers Everywhere!
Exploring number is a lot of fun in Junior Infants. Keep up the hard work at home identifying numbers in the environment, counting aloud, asking your child to bring you one jumper, two socks, etc.

The Senses
As part of our SPHE and SESE programme we are exploring the world of the senses. So far, taste has been the favourite! We tasted something sweet, sour, bitter and salty. I was very impressed by how willing the boys and girls were to try something new- although they didn't need much persuasion to taste the sweet item! We also investigated the connection between smell and taste- holding our nose while chewing to see if it made a difference. Give that a go at home!

Patterns!
We are busy learning about patterns- and they can be found all around us. Help support your child by pointing out the patterns on your clothes, curtains, wrapping paper or even the zebra crossing. If you find yourself stuck in on a rainy day, give your child a pattern to continue with their colours, or fingerprints in different paints or even using objects- sock, shoe, sock, shoe......

For Science Week we investigated how we could make raisins dance! Check out the two short clips of our investigations below.

Shapes!
We have started to investigate the shapes all around us, beginning with squares. Identifying and exploring circles, triangles and rectangles will follow!

Halloween!
Ghosts, witches, monsters and pumpkins-
we love everything about Halloween! Dressing up and making lots of people jump with our scary songs is giving us pure delight!
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson is a class favourite already.
(The rich language and rhyme in the story make it a teacher's favourite too!)
More or Less?
We have been learning all about more (He has more toys than me!)
and less (I have less toys than her!) in maths.
Use this language as often as you can at home too!
The Long and the Short of It
We have been busy exploring things that are tall, long, short, wide, narrow, big and small. Help reinforce these concepts at home whenever you get a chance- scarves provide lots of opportunities for chat.

We went out to find signs in the environment that Autumn is here! Keep your eyes peeled to and from school for conkers, leaves and sweet chestnuts. Don't forget to leave what you find for the hedgehogs. We have lots in school already on our nature table. We had lots of fun mixing paint to make brown for our Autumn leaves. Ask your child to teach you the simple song 'Leaves Are Falling'!
Babies!
Busy learning about how we have grown and changed since we were babies, we have been showing off our skills getting baby to sleep in the buggy after a quick nappy change!

Learning our first group of sounds satipn is so much fun!
We've been busy matching and sorting. Poor Ms. McKeon kept coming in with the wrong shoes on so she needs our help!
