Helping your child to think mathematically is as easy as...housework! Get a little help sorting the socks and you will have plenty of opportunity to talk about size, patterns, sorting and matching. Count the bowls needed for breakfast in the morning. Pour the juice into different size glasses. Hang the coats in order of size. Look closely at the shapes all around us, perhaps while mopping the tiles! Tidy the toys by grouping them into boxes of cars/dolls/dinosaurs/etc. Point out numbers wherever you see them. Sing number songs. Let your child save a little money- and spend it! Talk about time, using before, after, first, last, etc. Play board games that involve a dice or counting squares. Talk about the football scores.
Talk about maths. Have fun!
